Bout of Books 6.0 Goals & Book List

It has been 5 months since the last BoB and I have been patiently awaiting for January 7 to roll around. I've decided to take what I did last time and try and stick with it, instead of attempting more. Because each time I attempt more, I don't quite get there :P So taking it easy! Maybe for Bout of Books 7.0 I can go crazy. I've also decided to read my January books FIRST and then start on my leftover books from 2012. This way I don't get behind on my books I have to read this month and stay behind all year.

The Goals:
  • Read 300 pages each day.
  • Finish 5 books
  • Participate in at least 3 challenges - one down, two to go (Mon); did another (Tues); did my last today (Sun)
  • Participate in one Twitter chat - participated in Monday's 1pm CST one :)
  • Visit bloggers also participating and leave lots of comment love - every day!
  • Beat my last readathon accomplishments: 4 books, 1251 pages
The Books:
  • Roseannearchy by Roseanne Barr
  • Dry by Augusten Burroughs
  • Four to Score by Janet Evanovich
  • Crimson Frost by Jennifer Estep (Netgalley)
  • Pandemonium by Lauren Oliver
  • Gone by Michael Grant
  • Hunger by Michael Grant
  • Poison Princess by Kresley Cole
  • *Added* Beautiful Creatures by Kami Garcia/Margaret Stohl
Total of 8 books and 3288 pages. To get all of these done, I would have to read over 400 pages a day. But I like to overchallenge myself. :) I at least want 5 books read and 300 pages each day. We'll see what happens!

The Bout of Books read-a-thon is organized by Amanda @ On a Book Bender and Kelly @ Reading the Paranormal.  It is a week long read-a-thon that begins 12:01am Monday, January 7th and runs through Sunday, January 13th in whatever time zone you are in.  Bout of Books is low-pressure, and the only reading competition is between you and your usual number of books read in a week.  There are challenges, giveaways, and a grand prize, but all of these are completely optional.  For all Bout of Books 6.0 information and updates, be sure to visit the Bout of Books blog.

Fortune Plans for 2013

I've gotten really overwhelmed in the last few months with personal blogging - and also a little discouraged. Sometimes it is hard for me not to compare blogs. So I took to messaging my besties: Amber & Melissa. They helped me come up with some ideas and I'm excited to change up Fortune Favors ever so slightly.

I've always tried to stick to a very normal posting schedule. In the new year, it will be mixed up a bit and go like this:

Sun - TV/Movies/Pop Culture
Mon - Most Clicked for TPP + Weekend Update (like Melissa does on her blog)
Tues - TPP linky party
Weds - Book Review
Thurs - Things I Don't Love Thursday with Melissa
Fri - Nail Files
Sat - Personal Post/Off day

Per Amber's suggestion, I will try to link up to more hops. I usually put all my energy into Fantastical. It's my blog baby. It gets all my attention. I do work very hard to put some love into this blog, but it's definitely not my first priority.

I am also probably going to change my sponsorship to swap spots and a one size (like a largeish) that is $5. I've really fallen off this whole sponsorship/group giveaway/spotlight type deal. That's not what my blog is about. My blog is about my life - my kids, my cats, my hubs, what I read, what I watch, etc. Not about other people's blogs - no offense, y'all :)

So that's the major plan and hopefully I'll stick to it and it'll make Fortune more successful (not necessarily popularity wise, but building a better relationship with the followers I already have and draw them in to comment!).

Nail Files #52: Best Manis of 2012

One of the other Nail Filers shared her favorite polishes of 2012 (I can't remember who, but thank you!) and I thought it was a great idea. Especially since I'm visiting family and don't have all my polish with me. So here are my favorite manis and favorite Pinspiration manis of 2012.

My Reviews:

Best Movies of 2012

The Hunger Games: Definitely one of the very best book to movie adaptations I've seen. I was worried it'd be butchered. There weren't too many changes which was great. I love Jennifer Lawrence. I'm very excited for Catching Fire. [Blog post review: here]

Dark Shadows: You really cannot go wrong when it comes to a Johnny Depp movie.
This one was absolutely hilarious. [Blog post review: here]

Ted: When I saw the synopsis in the end of 2011 about this movie, I was definitely skeptical.
When I saw the previews, I was on board. Seth MacFarlane is a genius. Hubby and I saw this for a date night and it was absolutely hilarious. There were so many moments of not-breathing laughing. [Blog post review: here]

Looper: I would have to say this is the best movie I've seen all year. I'm a huge JGL fan. I like Bruce Willis and Emily Blunt too. The time travel/assassination plot was well thought out and well executed. [Blog post review: here]

The Campaign: This one was a lot more crude than I expected, but I was totally okay with it.
I love crude humor that may or may not take it to far. We laughed throughout the whole movie.

Mirror, Mirror: After being incredibly disappointed by Snow White & The Huntsman, I turned to the competitor Snow White movie. Mirror ended up being amazing. It was funny, sweet, light-hearted, and more. Julia Roberts played an evil queen brilliantly. The male lead - the Prince - reminded me so much of Ewan McGregor. [Blog Post Review: here]

Best TV Shows of 2012

Game of Thrones: Season 2 did NOT disappoint.

Source: google.co.uk via Sarah on Pinterest

Modern Family: My husband I started watching this in October. We watched the previous seasons and then caught up. It's definitely our most favorite tv show. I can never pick a favorite character - I love them all.

Adventure Time: We discovered this show this year too. My husband and I will watch it after the kids are in bed. We have plans to do a family-theme Halloween in AT style. Hubby is going to be Ice King, I'm gonna be Princess Bubblegum, Matthew is going to be Finn (and carry a Jake stuffed animal), and Cami is going to be Marceline the vampire.

The Vampire Diaries - I started watching TVD in the end of 2011 and marathoned until I caught up. I was very Team Stefan in the beginning, but now I'm Team Damon. People told me that I would come around :)

Nail Files #51

Wet 'N Wild's I Need a Refresh-Mint with NYC's Starry Silver

Since I didn't have much success with Julep's holiday polishes...
I brought along my favorite mint color and a few glitters. I hadn't tried the Starry Silver yet. It's this pretty silver glitter with chunks of pink and blue dot glitter. I think they turned out pretty festive :)

My First VoxBox.

I recently signed up for Influenster and have been reviewing like a maniac. I've gone and checked out some opinions on products and other goodies on the site as well. As a very stubborn, particular consumer, I value peoples' opinions before I go out and waste money on something.

Disclaimer: I received a Cosmo VoxBox in the mail via Influenster for my honest opinions. I was not compensated for these opinions in any way.

So...what exactly did I get in my Cosmo VoxBox??

Starting at Top Left: Ghirardelli Sea Salt escape chocolate bar, Pilot Frixion Ball Pen (in black and purple), Gillette Venus Embrace razor with Venus & Olay cartridge and $2 off coupon,
and Bath & Body Works Forever Red perfume (7mL)

My Thoughts

Ghirardelli Sea Salt Escape chocolate bar
I'm a huge fan of Ghirardelli anyways, so having this in my voxbox made my day. Not to mention it is a sea salt chocolate bar. I just recently discovered the magic of sea salt with sweets. As if sweets weren't addictive enough! I am on the lookout for another couple of these to bake with - I'm thinking brownies.

Pilot Frixion Ball pen
My go-to pen is the Pilot G2. I'm a complete pen snob, use pens pretty much exclusively, and I don't like others to borrow my pens. I didn't know what to expect with the Frixion. I like that it is a gel ink, much like the G2, and I really love the erase feature. My 5 year old just used it on his homework. It writes smoothly and evenly. The purple one is really pretty. Personally, I still prefer the Pilot G2 for a black pen, but I do like the Frixion.

Gillette Venus Embrace razor
Since I started shaving my legs in middle school, I've used Venus razors. They are easily the best razor on the market while maintaining a reasonable price. I started using the disposable Venus lately and haven't tried the newest of the nondisposable razors - I believe the last "new" one I tried was the Venus Vibrance. I've actually turned my husband into a Venus fan and he uses them for shaving his face (and chest).  I also have particularly sensitive skin. Venus razors are the only razors that don't irritate it. Probably one of my favorite things about the Venus razors is that you can use any of the cartridges on any of the razor bases. Even though I have an Embrace base, I can use any of the Venus cartridges. I haven't gotten to try the Venus & Olay cartridge, but look forward to it. The Embrace was a very close shave with its five blades. I'd absolutely recommend any girl (or guy) to use Venus razors...whether it be the Embrace or any other. The Embrace is definitely the best of the ones I've tried!

Bath & Body Works Forever Red perfume
This was the part of my voxbox I was least excited about. I'm not a perfume kind of girl. I don't wear it and I don't like the overpowering smell of it. I pulled out the Forever Red and immediately fell in love. Let me just share what the BBW site says about it:
"Our most luxurious longest lasting fragrance blends opulent notes of fiery red pomegranate and delicate peche de vigne, a rare and fleeting French peach. Soft petals of red osmanthus give way to notes of addictive velvety marshmallow and a surprising finale of rich vanilla rum that leaves an unforgettable impression.

  • Top Notes: Fiery Pomegranate, Rare French Peach, Luminous Apple
  • Mid Notes: Red Peony, Night Marigold, Red Osmanthus
  • Dry Notes: Rich Vanilla Rum, Velvety Marshmallow, Oak Wood"
It smells so good. Nothing is too overpowering and the blends of the scents - I cannot even explain how good it smells! Definitely stop by your local BBW and get a whiff of these. You won't leave the store without a Forever Red scent - it comes in body lotion, body mist, body cream, shower gel, perfume, and a perfume/lip gloss wand combo!

Looper

A few weeks ago, I talked about The Campaign. We actually saw The Campaign and Looper days apart. So Looper is not fresh in my mind, however, I will try and get my "OMG THIS IS AMAZING" out there. Because that's precisely how I feel.

I adore this movie poster!

Synopsis via IMDB: In 2074, when the mob wants to get rid of someone, the target is sent 30 years into the past, where a hired gun awaits. Someone like Joe, who one day learns the mob wants to 'close the loop' by transporting back Joe's future self.

When I was a little itty bitty girl and Angels in the Outfield came out - it was like my favorite movie and I had the hugest crush on JGL. I feel like he's one of those child stars that kept it together and turned into a brilliant actor as an adult. I have seen many movies of his and never been disappointed.

I have always like Bruce Willis too. In fact, for some reason, I seem to get him when I try to do the celebrity lookalike thing. Hmm...

Looper is a little difficult to grasp at first. Not in a very overpowering, negative way, but it's a movie where you cannot shut off your brain. You have to let it figure out everything. It's very amazing. The world building and the character building was outstanding. The whole cast was incredible. This is only my second time seeing Emily Blunt in a movie - and she is very talented and convincing. She's also so beautiful. Emily Blunt's son in the movie blew me away - he was so brilliant for being such a young little guy. The plot was well done. It's honestly one of my newest favorite movies. I can't wait for it to come out on DVD so I can watch it again and again and again!

Nail Files #50

Julep Vivien
Okay, so I got my second Julep box...and I've tried out all three of the polishes. Vivien is amazingly adorable and I love it. But it chipped really fast. I tried to do the first pinspiration nail with the green polish, but it totally peeled off with the tape. I've ended up cancelling my Julep Maven subscription. The colors are amazing, but the polish doesn't meet my nail polish standards.

My Life Lately.

I guess I'm overdue for a "hey, there is more than just TPP, books, and nails to my life" post. But I've been so durn busy that I haven't gotten around to a personal life post. I think I finally have a second to breathe today before the madness starts again.

So let's go over my life for the past month and a half:

In the beginning of November, Cami & I had the flu. Matthew gave it to us after being sick maybe 2 days. We had it for a week. Nick was down in GA/TN because his little brother was graduating Basic Training :) I skyped with him, my sister-in-law Emma, and soon to be sister-in-law, Casey (Nick's brother Zack and her got engaged this past weekend!)
My poor sick baby with Muffin ^^

I had FRG Leader training, a dentist appt, and the kids had dentist appts. Hubs has had 24hr staff duty three times in November. Plus there have been steering meetings and FRG meetings (Family Readiness Group - it's the army's volunteer group that each company has to keep spouses and family members informed of company events). Then Nick got sick for a whole weekend or so with the flu :(

The kids playing with the train set at the dentist ^^

My baby lost his first tooth on Nov 20!! He never takes a serious picture anymore. So here is his derpin' face. He's actually really good at making his one eye cross LOL

We went to our friends' for Thanksgiving. Here was the turkey I made:

My little man got the Good Citizen award for November at his school. All of us surprised him and came to the ceremony. He was so excited that Nick got to come. He waved so much at us until it started! He's on the bottom row, far left.

We put up our tree - hubby fighted it at first and then once it was up he mentioned he was glad we did because it looks awesome and festive.

The first Monday in December, hubs left to go do a field exercise for a week. Matthew had his first parent/teacher conference a few days later. It went so well. He is leaps and bounds ahead of all the kids, especially in reading. I'm not sure how they do the levels, but most of the kids are at an a or b, Matthew is at a g. He is doing so well with everything. He listens well, is respectful, and he has tons of friends. His teacher said she loves how excitable he is. He gets excited about everything! :) I'm so very very proud of him! I was really worried that he'd be a little behind because he didn't go to preK and kids are so smart nowadays, but thankfully he is doing well!
^^ His page in the class book - he said he's an author and illustrator!

Cami and I went on a coffee date with the other company FRG leaders in the battalion. This is totally out of the norm for me because I'm so shy. But the other ladies are really sweet and we sat around for I think way longer than we planned chatting it up.

Last Sunday, the kids and I went to the dining facility on the airfield to help make and bake cookies for the single soldiers with the other companies. It was really fun to get to hang out with two of the other wives from Charlie Company and to get to do something fun and awesome for the single soldiers. But that took up most of my Sunday and Cami had been sick on Saturday and I thought I was catching it...so I was asleep by 9:15pm (which is super early for me).

*phew*

Nick got back from the field yesterday and tomorrow we have a FRG meeting, and then FRIDAY!!!! Friday we leave at midnight to go home to Tennessee for a few weeks. :) I'm so excited. My mom is coming down from Minnesota too and I haven't seen her in 3 years and I'm so happy!
