Synopsis:
1. Never trust anyone.

2. Remember they are always searching.

3. Don’t get involved.

4. Keep your head down.

5. Don’t fall in love.

Five simple rules. Ariane Tucker has followed them since the night she escaped from the genetics lab where she was created, the result of combining human and extraterrestrial DNA. Ariane’s survival—and that of her adoptive father—depends on her ability to blend in among the full-blooded humans in a small Wisconsin town, to hide in plain sight at her high school from those who seek to recover their lost (and expensive) “project.”

But when a cruel prank at school goes awry, it puts her in the path of Zane Bradshaw, the police chief’s son and someone who sees too much. Someone who really sees her. After years of trying to be invisible, Ariane finds the attention frightening—and utterly intoxicating. Suddenly, nothing is simple anymore, especially not the rules…

My Thoughts:
I didn't read the synopsis before reading the book. This one was purely shameless cover-judging and an author who is on my to-read list a few times. I was really excited once I started reading that the main character, Ariane, is an alien-human hybrid.

The book has a Mean Girls-type feel to it. Ariane is just trying to fit in, especially when she kind of stands out. She has sharp cheekbones, almost white hair, and pale skin with a silver tint. Not to mention, her eyes are so dark that they almost blend in with her pupils - forcing her to have to wear colored contacts. Her "dad" works for GTX who is looking for their most prized possession: Ariane. She used to have telekinetic powers before she put up a mental block and she can hear other people's thoughts. Her best friend, Jenna, is obsessed with being in the popular crowd with the queen bee, Rachel Jacobs, granddaughter of the CEO of GTX. Rachel is just interested in humiliating the ever-so-desperate Jenna. Ariane is compelled to defend her friend (no matter how crappy of a friend Jenna is) and that fuels Rachel to attack a new target, Ariane.

Zane is a childhood friend of Rachel's who is just sick of her games. He has enough to deal with, what with his mom leaving after his perfect older brother left for college and never living up to his brother in his dad's eyes. He is intrigued by the mystery of Ariane after she stands up to Rachel.

Zane and Ariane were pretty likable characters. I was not a fan of Jenna whatsoever and Rachel and group were typical popular snobs. I loved the ending of this book most and that is why I gave it 4 stars. It was a very unique premise - hybrid trying to fit in and being hunted down by a company. I'm excited to read the next book in the series!
