Book Review: Simon Thorn and the Viper's Pit by Aimee Carter

Publish Date: February 7, 2017
304 pages [Kindle edition]
Bloomsbury USA Children

Synopsis:
Simon Thorn only recently discovered that he's an Animalgam--one of a secret race who can shift into animals. Now, for the first time in his life Simon has real friends to train and study with at the secret Animalgam Academy. The only missing part is his mother, held captive by his evil grandfather, Orion, who's bent on taking over the animal world.

To rescue his mom, Simon must head cross-country with his friends, battling rogue Animalgams and their own doubts and torn loyalties along the way. But if Simon's going to succeed, he will need to keep Orion from gathering together the fragments of a terrible weapon, or the lives of everyone Simon loves will be at risk.

With plenty of action and adventure and characters full of heart, this story is perfect for fans of Rick Riordan and Brandon Mull.

My Thoughts:
I was gifted an ebook via Netgalley.
Overall, I would say this is a solid sequel to Simon Thorn and the Wolf's Den. I really loved seeing more of Ariana and Jam, as well as, being introduced to new Animalgams. I'm liking how family dynamics are ever present throughout the novel. It's interesting to see the different characters struggle with finding a family in those they share blood with and then realizing they have family to those they don't share blood with. The Reptile Kingdom was fascinating, but I cannot wait for the next installment to see the next kingdom.

I knocked off a star due to angsty Simon and Winter - who both don't seem to take the mature route when upset. Reminds me of angsty Harry Potter.
